“Do you want to solve a murder?”Uemura Satoru has never been very aware of his surroundings until the summer before his last year of highschool, when a boy named Hitokawa Yosae tumbled into his life. Pulled along by Yosae's bold personality, he finds himself diving headfirst into a world of unknowns. Enthusiastic about solving a local cold case murder, Yosae convinces the timid Satoru to aid in slowly unravelling a dark secret hiding in their peaceful town. A secret that might be closer than they think.The two of them begin to uncover layers of corruption, connections, cover ups and more hidden within the small town they live in. And over the summer and last year of school begin to grow closer, with Yosae showing Satoru many new opportunities and outlook on life that begins to cause strife within his family.

Yosae’s name roughly reads into the meaning of 'yosei' - "a bewitching spirit" and Hitokawa which can be read composed of "hito" (人), meaning "person" and "kawa" which can be read as "river" or “part”...but more importantly "皮" can be read as "skin" or metaphorically meaning mask. Hitokawa can be read as “Unmasking”. His name is misread throughout the story, Yosae’s real name is never revealed, his name is a mess of common words. .Yosae is a bright and adventurous personality, while he tends to act as if he has nothing to hide, his words and actions are often seeped in secrecy and mystery. His gaze is strong and unwavering but oddly inhuman, as if it can see right through most people. While friendly and likable, Yosae is unfiltered and blunt, able to call out peoples hidden intentions with ease, and often making enemies because of it.Often compared to a class clown, he never seems to take things seriously & lives unafraid of the world or his own actions. Yosae pulls Satoru along at a fast pace, unwilling to stop or hesitate when confronted by the others easily spooked and avoidant personality. In every sense the two of them are polar opposites.While Yosae will do everything to understand and solve the things around him, Satoru will do everything to keep his gaze pointed towards the ground.Yosae’s eyes unnerve many of the people he meets, he will make jokes about his scars but will not address them.

Satoru's name primarily means "to understand" "to know" or "to perceive" while his surname of Uemura uses the kanji "植村" and read as "planted village". Throughout the story, Satoru insists on his first name to be used, having a disdain for his surname. Satoru is a hesitant, withdrawn, and avoidant; making him unapproachable in most situations.Being the son of the mayor, Satoru has always had eyes on him, the constant hesitancy and eggshells around him further pushed his antisocial personality. From a young age he was saddled with his fathers ego and reputation. Nicknamed 'turtle' due to his tendency to withdraw himself into his 'shell' and keep his head tucked in for his own perceived protection.While sharp witted deep down, he has always been aware of the oddities around him...but due to his personality saw everything as too much effort and stress to involve himself in. He permanently keeps his gaze on the ground. Satoru doesn't think he is able to keep up with Yosae's personality but finds himself pulled along and towards him time and time again. He is unable to keep his mind off Yosae once they meet and further spirals as he attempts to look directly at the things he's avoided all his life. While opposites, the two get along better than most.Satoru always seems to be staring at Yosae's back as if he will vanish at any moment.Satoru is prone to panic attacks & usually has a slightly dazed or worried/tired look to him.

Satoru has always been able to see spirits, and has always kept his head down because of it. When a particularly stubborn spirit latches onto him one day in attempt to harm him, he’s shocked when an unlikely hero saves the day. Yosae, a classmate who he’s never interacted with, appears and in an instant the spirit is gone. In its place Satoru notices the striking change in Yosae’s right eye and white streaks in his hair. Yosae turns out is partly possessed by a fox spirit, which gives him the ability to ‘eat’ spirits and the supernatural. However, it feels off to Satoru… the truth is soon revealed that Yosae doesn’t exorcise spirits, his ability completely destroys them. And with each spirit he eats, the further away from being human he becomes.Yosae quickly starts to tag along with Satoru everywhere, and Satoru’s heart of gold he is set on finding a way to try and help Yosae.Wanting to get to the bottom of Yosae’s abilities and teach him to not destroy spirits, the two of them leap headfirst into the dark supernatural underbelly of their small town & a curse that has been festering in the land for centuries.
